Recycling in Vancouver

We can be proud of the curbside recycling we do in Vancouver, but we should try to do better.
.
  • Curbside recycling for detached houses, duplexes, and triplexes is effective now.
    • Yellow Bag - paper, cardboard. newspaper, cereal boxes
    • Blue Box - most metal and hard plastic containers. New: Single use coffee cups and lids.
    • Green Bin - kitchen scraps, garden waste, and yard trimmings
    • Grey Box - glass bottles (metal or plastic tops go in Blue Box)
  • Most apartments and condos have great recycling plans, but it would be even better if the residents were more careful about sorting. BLC is happy to give 15 minute Recycling 101 seminars to help residents learn better sorting techniques.
  • Many other items can be dropped off at recycling depots. BLC helps by hosting pop-up recycling stations around Vancouver so residents don't need to go all the way to the depots themselves.
  • To be more effective and convenient, the next items the City needs to collect are:
    • Plastic bags, film, and foam curbside, even if only once a month.
    • Single use containers in municipal blue bins on sidewalks in commercial areas, especially areas such as Little Italy where there is a high density of coffee shops.
    • Residents should be able to sort and bag each of the other items the recycle depots accept and put them into their blue bins.
If you agree with these suggestions for the City, call 311 and make your recommendations.
