Recycling Action Committee

The Recycling action committee is headed by Wally Kunz of www.BuildLocalCommunities.ca. Our goal is to provide pop-up recycling drop offs for items the recycling depots take but the City does not yet collect curbside. We welcome other ideas for repair, reuse, refill, and recycle.

To participate in the action committee, please email [email protected] or call 604-817-4727.

Pop-up Recycling for items the City does not collect at curbside

Many residents find it difficult to take their recycling to the depots around Vancouver. Pop-up recycling stations make it much more convenient. Several community centres host these pop-up recycling stations, but we can do even better. You can find full details on the BLC web page for Recycling.

Lobby the City to deploy blue municipal bins for containers in high coffee shop density areas.

Similar to the City’s black municipal bins for trash, they already have blue bins for recycling single use containers (mainly coffee cups). However, they do not deploy them in areas with a high density of coffee shops. We need to lobby the City to keep these coffee cups out of our landfill.

Lobby the City to collect plastic bags and styrofoam semi-monthly as well as monthly collection for all other items accepted at recycling depots

Vancouver residents love the ability to recycle their plastic bags and styrofoam at pop-up recycling stations at community centres. However, this shouldn’t be left up to volunteers to organize and support. Why can’t the City collect plastic bags and styrofoam every two weeks curbside along with the Blue landfill wheelie bins?

These other recyclable items are not collected curbside but can be dropped off at recycle depots.

  • batteries
  • light bulbs
  • electronics, phones, computers
  • ink & toner cartridges
  • vaping devices
  • smoke detectors
  • thermostats
  • small appliances
  • pens
  • books
  • razors and blades

Volunteers with Build Local Communities collect these items at community centres. Why doesn’t the City accept these items in blue bins as long as they are separated into plastic bags?
