Traffic Action Committee
The Traffic action committee is headed by three GWAC board members: Craig Ohlenberger, Susan Briggs, and Wally Kunz. Our goal is to determine traffic issues important to the residents, businesses, and visitors to Grandview Woodland and propose solutions.
To participate in the action committee with other issues, solutions, or just join the discussion, please email [email protected].
Paint all pedestrian crosswalks on Commercial Drive
Drivers do not understand that every intersection is a pedestrian crosswalk. On Commercial Drive, we get too many honks and fingers from entitled drivers. By painting the crosswalks at every intersection on Commercial Drive, it will support the Pedestrian First, Pedestrian Friendly aspect that the City and BIA supports.
Hop-On Hop-Off electric golf carts
To keep Commercial Drive vibrant, we need to make it easier for shoppers, visitors, and tourists to visit our shops and services. Here’s how free Hop-On Hop-Off electric golf carts making a circuit on Commercial Drive from Adanac to 14th Ave will help.
- Car drivers do not need to park very close to where they want to shop. They can use the parking garage at Il Mercato or any available residential spots since they only need to get to Commercial Drive to use the golf carts.
- Skytrain users and bus users will have golf carts immediately available when they disembark
- Residents only need to get to Commercial Drive to have access to the whole Drive
Traffic calming
- Evening rush hour traffic on 2nd and 3rd between Commercial Drive and Victoria Drive creates road rage on the single lane streets. If left turns for traffic going east from 1st Ave to Victoria Drive were allowed as well as for traffic going west from 1st Ave to Victoria Drive, there is still enough throughput in the single through lanes. Two through lanes gives enough volume that most traffic must wait at the lights anyway.
- Regular traffic still has trouble during non-rush hours. 2nd Ave should be one way going west and 3rd Ave should be one way going east. Traffic calming of 30 kph and speed bumps is also necessary.
- To help through traffic on Victoria, 3 or 4 parking spaces on each side towards 1st Ave should be no parking at all hours.
Single lane each way on Commercial Drive south of 1st Ave to Grandview Hwy
Reducing traffic from two lanes to just one in each direction encourages traffic to reduce its speed. Other benefits are:
- Curb lane gives more space for patios, street furniture, art, pop-up recycling, and porta-potties. Black municipal garbage bins can move from the sidewalk into the curb lane. Blue municipal bins for containers can be added in the curb lane to keep coffee cups out of the land fill.Sidewalk signs can be moved to the curb lane.
- The next lane, that had been used for traffic, can now be 100% for parking, loading and parking zones, and bus stops.
- Since crosswalks are reduced from four lanes to two, pedestrians cross more quickly.
Mobility and Active Transportation
Mobility, especially electric bikes and stand scooters are gaining in popularity. What upgrades to infrastructure are important and how can safety be improve?\
Promoting 20 Minute Communities
In 20 Minute Communities, residents can live, work, play, shop, learn, and socialize within 20 minutes of their home without having to use a personally owned car.
Since cities have been designed for over a century around the personal automobile, it will take some time to redesign to not having to use a personal car so we should start ASAP with new zoning guidelines, etc.
