Volunteers are always welcome, whether just as a local volunteer for your own community or a volunteer at large who helps other neighbourhoods become communities. Volunteer tasks don’t take much time.

Building Local Communities

There are many ways for individuals to help their communities without waiting for the municipal government to act. Would you like to get started?

Community List

Every little neighbourhood should have a community list for socializing, security, and special issues. It’s simple to create and maintain a list. Just start knocking on your neighbour’s doors.

  • Canvassing neighbourhoods - find local volunteers and build the shared community list. Each pass only takes an hour or so and we only canvass in good weather.
  • List administrator - record residents in the community using a spreadsheet or an email group. Once it’s set up, there is very little maintenance because people don’t move from their community often.

Community Recycling

There are many items that can be recycled at a depot but the City does not collect them curbside. If you are lucky enough to have  a couple of hours a week to donate and a way to get those items to the depot, you can provide a service to your neighbours. Find a friend who can help you out or take over if you’re busy. With a little practice, your neighbours will be rinsing and bagging so you just need to take to your local recycle depot. We have already started pop-up recycling at several community centres This is a great place to start your search for a locatioin.

  • Pop-up recycling - set up the recycling bins once a week. If you like, this is also a great chance to interact with your neighbours. Even invite passersby to drop off their recycling at your pop-up station.
  • Deliver recycling to the depot. This only takes a half an hour a week.

Municipal Recycling

The City has big blue bins for containers, similar to the sidewalk black bins for landfill. This is where we should deposit coffee cups when we are out and about. Unfortunately, the Cits does not deploy them in all the best places. For example there are no municipal blue bins on Commercial Drive in Little Italy, probably the densist locatioin of coffee shiops in Vancouver. we should get together and petition the CIty to install them where they'll do the best good.

Community Traffic Calming

With more people moving into Vancouver all the time, the traffic is getting worse. Do you need traffic calming in your neighbourhood? Set up a petition in your neighbourhood to have the CIty do a traffic study.

Community Patio Chats

Patio Chats will determine which projects your neighbours want the City to look into. In order to get action we need to find out what your neighbours want most. The great thing abut Patio Chats is you can also combine the other community projects and be more efficient.
